Dr. Joseph Bartolai is an Assistant Research Professor in the Product and Process Design department of Penn State’s Applied Research Laboratory. His current research focus is investigating the inherent mechanical properties of equation-based lattice structures and identifying novel ways to manufacture these lattice structures. Dr. Bartolai also has research projects in Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing, focusing on toolpath optimization for stronger parts and process monitoring for in-situ quality control. Prior to joining ARL, Dr. Bartolai received his Ph.D. from Penn State in 2018. His dissertation was on understanding and improving mechanical properties of MEX AM parts, and presented a novel theory for predicting the strength of thermoplastic polymer welds and how to translate these weld strength predictions to MEX AM part strength predictions.
