Martine D’Alessandro grew up in Georgia, about 300 miles from the coast. From an early age, her favorite vacations were spent beach camping, combing for shells, and visiting Georgia’s Barrier Islands. In college, after her first experience scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, she was resolute in pursuing a career in marine science, determined to understand and protect these beautiful, vital marine ecosystems. In 2015, Martine received her M.S. Degree from the Rosenstiel School. After three years and 1,000 dives conducting seagrass and coral condition monitoring while working for an environmental consulting company, Martine returned to the Rosenstiel School as the lab manager and Senior Research Associate in Dr. Diego Lirman's Coral Restoration and Benthic Ecology Lab where she manages two underwater coral nurseries and contributes to cutting edge research, hoping to reverse the 80% declines in coral cover the Caribbean has seen in recent decades.
