Alexandra Wen (B.S. Duke 2019) is a PhD student whose decades long love affair with marine science included ostracods, deep sea oceanography, and large-scale algal culturing before culminating in an interest in and love for coral-algal symbiosis. Alexandra’s research focuses on quantifying the benefits and tradeoffs inherent to associations with different genera of Symbiodiniaceae in multiple Caribbean coral species and life stages, as well as understanding the dynamics of these relationships under duress. Outside of cultivating a coral-specific love of macro photography, her free time is often spent reading, mini-road tripping around Florida, and caring for too many houseplants.
